Intended to combine and update information given in Frederick Webb Hodge's Handbook of Indians North of Mexico (Smithsonian Bureau of Ethnology Bulletin no. 30, 1905) and John Reed Swanton's Indian Tribes of North America (Smithsonian, 1953).
