No amount of pleading by Valentina Woodville could persuade her parents that she did not wish to marry the Marquis of Stockdale because she did not love him. After the wedding, her new husband told her he was willing to divorce her provided she acted out the part of a devoted wife for a year. Valentina was quite willing to comply, but the ensuing year wrought changes in her which made her coming freedom no longer so attractive.
