Descripción
The main idea underlying the preparation of the book has been to reproduce, partly by transcribing his own words and partly through the language of others, the surgical conditions of the period, his labours to solve the problem of sepsis, and the successful realisation which attended his efforts. In the series of pen-pictures by those who were closely associated with him, it is possible to obtain an impression of the nobility of his nature, of his sympathy, his gentleness and modesty. In these reminiscences are vividly portrayed his constant preoccupation, his perseverance and ceaseless efforts, his passion for truth and ascertained fact, and throughout all, his complete confidence, in spite of all opposition, in the ultimate universal acceptance of the great principle on which he founded the antiseptic system. - from Foreword.
