Twelve manuscripts, held by the Institut de France, Paris, in Leonardo's exact sequence and format containing over 2,000 pages of writings and drawings. Pocket size study notebooks deal with geometrical problems, mechanical questions, apparatus and machines, biographical memoires, and artistic and literary meditations: larger size codices contain drafts of treatises on painting, architecture, optics, and various sciences.
