Mr. Daiches first traces the history of English Bible translation, then makes a lengthy excursus into the development of Hebrew scholarship in Europe, and finally studies the work of the translators against a background of their times, differentiating between the two forces which produced such scholarship: the "back to the Bible" movement of the reformers and the disinterested scholarship that was a feature of the Renaissance.
