She lived with a Chinese family and met a variety of people: Chinese journalists, British diplomats, Japanese agents, American businessmen, intellectuals, crooks, dignitaries and adventurers. She lived in China at the of the Chinese Civil War, fought between the Kuomintang (KMT)-led government and the Communist Party of China (CPC).
