It has 1040 black and white plates, 32 color plates. In these photograph plates, each item is detaily captured from various angles to give a full view of the piece. The text tells how he came to create the work, who commissioned it, and other details such as surface of the rock, type of paints and such. It also details the lesser known works and those thought to be his work. At the time of it's first publication the book was; "The most comprehensive volume ever published on Michelangelo." —from the dustjacket. The book was compiled by the 'Instituto Geografico De Agostini', featuring several well know authors in the field of art and architecture. Each author has their own section of the book detailing one of the various aspects of Michelangelo's work.
